Today, we observe the National Day of Mourning.
We remember and honour all workers who have been killed, injured, or made ill in the workplace. As firefighters, we see firsthand the impact these tragedies have on families, coworkers, and our community.
Today is a reminder that every worker deserves to return home safely at the end of their shift.
We stand with those who have lost loved ones and renew our commitment to safer workplaces for all.
We remember. We honour. We will never forget.

Rest in Peace BrotherThe IAFF is saddened by the death of St. John’s Local 1075 President Jimmy O’Toole, who died from complications of occupational cancer.
A fire fighter since 2001 and a union leader for over a decade, Jimmy was fiercely committed to the health and safety of members across Newfoundland and Labrador and throughout Canada.
Long before his own cancer diagnosis in 2018, he helped lead the effort to establish presumptive coverage for 11 occupational cancers in Newfoundland and Labrador. Even as he faced cancer himself, Jimmy helped build on that progress by expanding presumptive coverage to include eight more cancers in 2022.
That advocacy continued through his service on the IAFF’s Occupational Health and Safety Committee, where he represented members across eastern Canada and helped shape the union’s work on occupational cancer.
Jimmy is survived by his wife, Crystal, and their sons, Gavin and Ryan. We keep them – and all who knew and loved Jimmy – in our prayers.

Oshawa Firefighters are proud to see #IAFF President Edward A. Kelly with Prime Minister Mark Carney on Parliament Hill to discuss what it takes to keep Canadians safe.
These conversations matter, ensuring firefighters are properly trained, equipped, and supported, from hazmat and wildfire response to addressing emerging risks like lithium-ion battery fires.
Advocating for line-of-duty death benefits and the safety of our members remains critical.
This is the work being done on behalf of firefighters across Canada.

President Peter Dyson and Vice President Nathan Langille had the opportunity to meet with Oshawa MP Rhonda Kirkland during the Legislative Conference this week.
Discussed key issues impacting our members, our profession, and the communities we serve here in Oshawa. These conversations are critical to ensuring firefighters’ voices are heard at the federal level and that public safety remains a priority.
We appreciate the time and engagement, and look forward to continuing the dialogue on behalf of our members and the residents of Oshawa.
